SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE: I'm not sure why this is getting so much praise. It's alright. The message is that karma will pay off for you eventually.
BE KIND, REWIND: Michel Gondry should stop making movies for his cat, or to pad his eHarmony profile or for whatever his motivations are. His next movie should be an action title and at no point will a character ever make anything out of cardboard. Constraints breed creativity! Anyway, this sucked and I'm not sure what the message was because I quit watching it. Something about old things being better than new things and you've just gotta believe.
THE WRESTLER: Unlike Gondry, Aronofsky easily switches things up for his 2008 film and comes off a hero. Too much wrestling in this movie, but overall really good for what it is despite the huge miscasting of Marisa Tomei as the aging stripper who has a tough time selling her lapdances in a dive bar. Instead of knowing about strip clubs, the writer and director demonstrate that they know both NES games and Call of Duty 4 in a clever little scene that I enjoyed. The message of the film is that you shouldn't be a Wrestler.
INSIDE: Heads up, Fullofkittens! This is a crazy fucking slasher movie from France that absolutely blew my mind. This movie, plus Sheitan and Frontier(s), has people saying that France is the new Japan for horror. Aside from some poor police procedure (a big movie pet peeve of mine) plus a weird case of zombie head trauma at the end, I was completely immersed for the whole ride and genuinely grossed out a couple times. The message of this movie is that you shouldn't be pregnant.
DEAD SET: Technically a miniseries, but you could download the whole 220 minutes and watch it in one sitting, pretending it's a movie. A fast-zombie movie made for British TV that is surprising high in production value and gore (heads up Fullofkittens). If it wasn't for the Dawn of the Dead remake we could use "British zombies" and "American zombies" to reference the zombie speeds in films. It's not faster to write, but it sounds cooler and more legit, like "Dutch angle". The Dead Set plot focuses on the Big Brother housemates who are isolated from the outbreak. Lots of social commentary and stinging indictments here! Unfortunately by the end I felt it was a very long way to go just to get to "TV turns us all into zombies". The message of the series is that TV turns us all into zombies. (Hidden message: Britain still watches a lot of TV!) |
