I thought it was pretty even handed in this respect. Originally I thought it would be another weepy letter to anti communist intelligentsia, and I was pleased to find that was not the case. Artists were shown to be shitty, shallow people who were occasionally great when the opportunity kicked them in the face. I especially liked the Stasi's fandom, since it stems from what appears to be a perfect ignorance of literature or any other art; as someone said above, he doesn't even seem sure what it is that makes him so concerned about their love and accomplishments. The icing on the cake would be if the story were based on a real writer who actually kind of sucked apart from the remarkableness of his life story. |
