The game wasn't designed for circle strafing and frankly it would be too easy and boring if it was there. Instead of lamenting that you can't sidestep an enemy's projectiles, think about how the game lets you shoot incoming knives, axes, and dynamite(!). It's all part of the set limitations on what the player can do and it all works just fine. Complaining that you can't sidestep to avoid attacks is like saying a 2D sidescroller is lacking because your fighter jet only has 4 degrees of freedom to dodge with instead of 6.

Whoever is claiming that it's a horror-fest is a pussy. In parts it's mildly creepy (regenerators) or jump-inducing (man in furnace) or adrenaline pumping (first chainsaw encounter), but it's mostly just a giggle-inducing monster shooting gallery. Any time a character opens their mouth in a cutscene is a reminder that the game never claims to be anything else.
