O'Rourke tends to be ideologically consistent, not so much party-bound, and especially less bound to the political fortunes of individual candidates. Limbaugh had to "carry the water" for candidates he didn't like because part of his role is to drive electoral politics. So Limbaugh actually had to go on the radio touting Joe Peckerwood for state senate in Tennessee, and wave the Republican flag, even though he knew the guy was not faithful to whatever metric Limbaugh uses to evalutate candidates.
O'Rourke doesn't. There is praise and criticism of Republicans in his work, most of it framed around their adherence or lack thereof to the kind of small government/individual liberty principles that used to be the stamp of the Republican party. When he says he voted for Bush "because he's a Republican," he's saying that even if the president is a turd, he's preferable to the alternative, when viewed in light of O'Rourke's ideology.

For the past week there have been signs all over campus advertising for doing a polar bear plunge to raise money for the special olympics. In case you aren't aware, a polar bear plunge is where you get stinking drunk on a cold-ass day, go to a frozen lake, cut a hole in the ice, strip down, then dive into the water. I loved the irony: Helping the special olympics... by doing something retarded.

I'm glad O'Rourke has you to explain his actions for him. Now what about the dude who once said to me during the 2000 campaign, "Al Gore's crazy! He wants us to go back to horse and buggy!"?

In 2000, I had a few people give policy reasons for voting Bush jr. Fans of privatizing social security and all. In 2004 there were only 2 issues bush voters ever mentioned. The ONLY issues, not taxes, not the war, not anything of substance, were these 2: Abortion and Fags. If abortion and fags weren't their issues, and for the professed majority they weren't, they were voting republican because they had always voted republican. Brand loyalty. My Grandpappy voted republican, my Daddy voted republican, and I'm voting republican by gum!

Democrats were the complete opposite. Liberals and democrats HATE the democratic party. I was fundraising for the DNC during the 2004 elections and Kerry supporters would say, "I don't want to give to the party, I just want to give to Kerry." Oh the number of times I had to explain the concept of federal matching funds to the leftiest left wingers so they understood that the only way they could no longer legally give to Kerry. Shit, I even got a letter in the mail (unrelated to my job) from Kerry saying to stop trying to give money to him and to give it to the party instead.

Shit! One night we had Naderites picketing the office! The republicans were a short walk away. Where were the fucking Buchananites picketing them? Sitting at home picking their nose then voting a straight party ticket so they didn't have to bother their pretty little heads about the issues.

So glad to hear that at least one of them was voting Bush to be subversive and ironic.
