What accomplishments? And I really doubt everyone or even a significant minority of the population was convinced of the likelihood of fame and fortune resulting from authoring in their youth a book that would save America. Most people who are smart enough to write passably are also smart enough to realize that they are not going to write a bestseller. It takes a special mixture to sit around awaiting your inevitable UNPRECEDENTED literary fame.
"Unconsciously": Take the girl that most impresses you, and imagine she was raised in the worst conceivable circumstances; I imagined that she would still bring a flood of adrenalin to my system when she smiled. Project her 20 years older, or put her in a different time and place in human history; I imagined that the part that affected me so intensely would stay the same. To be concise, I said "unconsciously" I guess because I consider the subconscious to be more strictly genetically (and not circumstantially) determined than the conscious mind. That's not the case, though, obviously parts of the subconscious are shaped to a great extent by life experiences. People have a nature, though, that is inalterable and that you can read on their faces, which is my justification for being superficial. And they might have a cruel brother or sister, but from the beginning you can discern a true conscience. I believed in that anyway. |
