It is entirely possible that I am missing out on the humor in your numerous “I am a genius” exclamations. Assuming that you are serious, I must object to this nonsensical insistence that your superior intellect allows you to enjoy particular works of art which cannot be enjoyed by anyone stupider than you. I am probably not as well educated as you are in the liberal arts, but I bet I can enjoy many books, paintings, etc more so than you. My enjoyment has nothing to do with my intellect and everything to do with my particular sensitivity to the non-obvious idea that may or may not be expressed in that art.
Are you saying that enjoyment of art is mostly intellectual? In my experience, much of art is enjoyed primarily aesthetically. Take Nabokov for example. When I read the annotated version of Lolita, I found myself marveling at the language, the plot and the characterizations as opposed to the barrage of obscure references, which only exhausted me. Maybe if I could understand all the references at first glance, this would not be the case.
Is this what you mean when you say that it takes a vast intellect to enjoy something like Scott Walker’s latest album? Can you provide any sort of evidence to warrant your wild claims that the way you enjoy Scott Walker’s latest album, which I admittedly find a bit boring, is exactly the same as other Scott Walker devotees? |
