But I saw it after Tannenbaums, which was a mistake. I saw Rushmore first of all, and was decidedly underwhelmed. It had funny parts, like Bill Murray. But mostly it was just awkward, and I found it painful to watch at times.
However, I liked Tannenbaums a lot, and Life Aquatic almost as much. I think they are both really good movies, even moreso if you can leave speculation about Anderson's possible genius/lack of genius and pretend you've never seen Wilson before to enjoy him at his funniest. Hell, Jeff Goldblum is funny in LA, and I thought that was impossible.
So if it's possible for you to do, set aside the current debate and just watch the two movies, preferably with a little distance between them. They are better than the sum of their parts, and most of their rabid fans. |
