Rome : Total War is a decent if extremely slow strategy game. I got over this by playing a single campaign on and off for about 6 months. (I divided it into smaller almost bite sized personal campaigns and once I'd achieved my goal I left the game for a few weeks and played something else.) This game has definate staying power once you get into it but it takes a while to gain the momentum to overcome the sheer scale of it.

I'm a huge X fan. But for the love of your sanity never pre-order an X game. In my experience it is best to wait for about a year before getting it since it takes that long for the ten squintillion patches and user scripts to come out that will actually make it playable (Latest news it that they are up to Patch 1.3 before the game has even been released to retailers. It's absolutely shocking.).

You have to enjoy setting up a self contained factory empire before you take on the story line. The combat, story line and fleet control in the last two games were mediocre at best. Apparently these issues have been addressed in X3.
