Fun, so far. I like the borders mechanism.
Rockpaperscism is taken to crazy extremes. Rocket artillery vs jeep, for example, the animation looks like you're filling the jeep with rockets, and when the jeep is completely full of rockets (90 seconds later) it blows up.
Game's constant upsells are a chore (literally). "Oh, you built a university, great! Now ... staff it. With scholars." HR rep for the uni too lofty a task for ya? Try the missile silo (missile sold separately), which has to be manually fired, and you have to manually reorder a new missile from HQ each time. And for some reason you buy armor upgrades at the granary.
Yeah, that's pretty much the reason I steer clear of most AoE type games: the extreme rock paper scissors system means that combat is pretty much strategy free except for telling rock units to force fire on scissors, etc. Plus in the AoE games, you have to pretty much have to spend all your time managing your resources and building. A lot of RTS's are described as clickfests pounding on the build button, but for RoS it's literally true. You have to build a crapload of barracks/factories/stables/airports/silos and constantly shift between them clicking build. In the late game when incomes are so huge (and especially when you research the AI upgrade that eliminates all buildtimes), wars are just a matter of setting all waypoints to the other guy and rapidly clicking "build".
The thing is, this was pretty much the case in AoE, Homeworld, and, to some extent, Dawn of War. At least RoS gives you tons of neat little upgrades and things to do with building. It's the closest thing yet to an RTS civ/ac game. So if AoE is your thing, I'd say RoS is about as good as it gets, but that doesn't mean it holds a candle to truly great RTS's like Starcraft and Generals. |
