Would I have gotten those badass Vardrag (god, the annoying voices) cataclysm missiles that kill battleships in one hit if I had scanned enough of them? I gathered the big bang missiles were the best.
Yes, you do get the cataclysm missiles, which are 2nd best to the Big Bangs. Those are basically the ultimate weapon in the game. Blast radius so big that it takes up most of the screen. Cataclysms are damn nice though, and you can get them if you scan a couple Vardrag ships that have them. Scanning also has another big function - it reveals all targetable components on the enemy ship. So...
Lasers were kind of pointless for anything but destroying shields, which anti-shield weapons did a better job of.
If you have 1 ship scan, revealing all the flak cannons and shield generators, you can have other ships with lasers (those cloaking ones are good at this) just go crazy on the shield generator with a selected targetting (I assume you know that clicking on an enemy component so that it flashes makes it the primary target). The shields drop like flies, really.
Missiles always got shot down by flak, and taking out the flak would require you to close with the ships, which would render your long range missiles useless. Area effect missiles were also most (theoretically) useful against tightly packed ships, which also ment their combined flak ensured no missile would ever get through. Same with any fighter craft which would get slaugheted if there were even one or two flak guns present.
Yeah, flak is really quite good against torpedos. However, it can be overwhelmed. It'll cost you some engineering points to resupply every mission, but send in a squad of fighters to tie up the flak cannons on your target, then start the barrage of torpedos. I generally had 2 large ships with the same type of torpedo when I tried this, and for most of the game, 2 of the best torpedos you have will destroy just about anything.
The awar for most fantastically useless weapon goes to those longe range, area effect anti-shield missiles. Any shield damage they did would be completely regenerated by the time you closed.
Those only worked for me a few times, when I put them on one of my bigass battleships and loaded up the light ships with anti-hull weapons. Battleship fires slow moving projectile, small ships run in on its tail, and if they avoid the ensuing blast, they rip enemy hulls apart. |
