Whatever some creexulesque persons might think, THIS will be the BGE (best game evar). However, something bothered me while I was jerking off to the trailers, I mean, like dumbfounded virgin grasping a luscious tit, *I shouldn't even have time to reach my cock before blowing my load*, and I did. I think I just figured out what is tarnishing my level of excitement for San Andreas.. Vice City had a lot going for it, like the 80's theme with all the obligatory pink neon, coke snorting, cold war paranoia, cheesy music and general naive attitude; also a heavy reliance on references to cult classics like SCARFACE and Miami Vice...
Now, I ask you, what does 90's Los Angeles have to offer?
This line of thinking stems from the belief that a GTA done well is diminished by a bad setting. We didn't seem to mind the utter genericness of GTA3, set in... fake New York (Psh, more like New BORE-k). True, the gameplay was new so the setting and theme did not require as much attention. Similarly I put forth that Rockstar North has claimed enough new features that GTA fans should be excited regardless of theme. FABIO didn't even look forward to Vice City. Remember that.
But I haven't given you an answer, dear luv_manko, so if you want something concrete, some tangible to hang your hat on, GTA: SA will hopefully take us back 10 years and reference the memes of Colors, Boyz -N-Da Hood, every NWA/Ice Cube/Eazy-E album, and that ilk. I guess you don't remember, maybe because you weren't a fan, but the early 90s had everyone tripping over themselves to rip off the west coast gangsta vibe*. Street gangs, crack, turf, corrupt cops, and phat beat violent rap: the genre of west coast gangsta. A genre which you and I put in the back seat to the 80's Miami drug scene, but still viable and though we like it less, today's youth are looking forward to it much more. Picture today's kids as Ali G. I for one look forward to the black and latinoness of the game. I will be making many a joke, and I will role play CJ to the max, and then beyond the max by actually transporting slang used in the game to real life. My cat will soon learn that he is in a rival gang, and I may have to take over his turf (the papasan chair).
Also remember that you're not just getting 90's LA. You're getting Las Vegas, San Francisco, countryside, and LA.
* This included me in my 1991 English class where we had to stage Shakespearean scenes set in the modern day. My group, lead by me, used toy guns and homemade blood packs to be latino gang members for our Romeo and Juliet scene. I played the guy who got killed. Metallicacio or whoever the fuck. Years later, I got ripped off. |
