OK Spielberg now owes me $17 by jeep 07/12/2005, 11:13am PDT
$7.50 for Jurassic Park 2 and $9.50 for this. Shot for shot, JP2 was the worst directing job I've ever seen out of him, and this movie is the worst job he's ever done with his actors. The directing in JP2 is still better than anything out of my three arch-nemesis: Jan De Bont, Joel Schumacher, and Gregg Fucking Araki.

The Dakota Fanning Issue is Spielberg's fault, not the 11-year-old child's. You know when you're watching a good scary movie, and you get that sense of creeping dread like the alien's about to jump out and eat somebody? That's the feeling you get just before every cut to Dakota Fanning. The real horror artists play with that a bit, sometimes they bluff a bit - oh it's just a cat or something. Oh it's just Dakota Fanning, every time. If OMM came back and all the articles were written by Zseni... you see the problem.

I do not know if Tom Cruise is really insane now, but this movie is a break from the normal Tom Cruise / Cycle of the Fool character arc. His character doesn't start out at the top of his game, he isn't smart, or particularly skilled at anything except...operating a crane? I'd black that out as a spoiler but it's fucking irrelevant to the film. He's a hapless retard for the first two-thirds of the movie, until he shows his character's real talent and commits premeditated murder.

Rest of the movie is wasted atmosphere and special effects. It's as bad as Fantastic Four looks.
