Bad. Boring. Drawn out.

Half the movie is Cruise & kids running through a panicked crowd, the other half is him trying to calm down his constantly screaming daughter. Did this movie really need Tom Cruise? Pony up his $70 million paycheck, then don't even put him in the posters? Wouldn't have blank posters just reading "Spielberg" been enough?

The heat ray effect of popping people, leaving their clothes intact, turned what I guess was supposed to be tragic and shocking scenes into me trying not to laugh (the new Darth Vader "NOOOOOOooooo"), especially the part where peoples' clothes start raining out of the sky from hundreds of feet up. Huh? Really efficient way to wipe out a species of 6 billion, one at a time. I was hoping for some area of effect heat wave flesh melting.

Minus a hundred points for telling instead of showing. "Hi, I'm new reporter Ms. Exposition. I'm here to fill you in on the plot without showing you any of it. Okay looks like my work is done here, see ya!" Worst blatant exposition character since Stir of Echoes.

Minus more points for the Tim Robbins basement and tentacle scene lasting about five hours longer than necessary.

What the hell was with the story change having the aliens bury tripods millions of years ago? Nobody ever discovered one of thousands of 200 foot metallic machines buried right underneath city intersections? What on earth was wrong with just having them fall out of the sky? It didn't make sense, and wasn't cool or stylish. So...why? Out of all the changes to make. Maybe they should have concentrated on altering the original story to make it less boring (which it was).

Sticking with the original disease ending = lame. It worked back in 1898 when sentient beings not knowing about germs was plausible to the general public. People were still stupid in the 50's so it kind of worked in the first movie too. But now? Especially considering the tripods' origin. Hey Spielberg, how did they bury all those things and still not know about deadly Earth germs?

"The Japanese managed to take a few out" Oh really? The mighty Japan defense force? Who knew Spielberg was an otaku. "The beautiful Japanese culture is lightyears ahead of the martians in tentacle technology!"
