There are the typical extreme attentions to detail and things the designers put it knowing that players will try to fuck with the mechanics. Touches like the PS2 clock advancing a week beyond your saved game will result in The End dying off of old age. They knew some players would try boss fights wearing a box or croc cap*, so they made the bosses laugh at you if you try it. Just countless little things like that scattered throughout the game.
* Why the hell did they have to make the croc cap so easy to miss? It's buried off the beaten path on one certain screen in a swamp about 1/5th the way through the game. That's it. If you're just trying to get to the next screen and not scour every square inch of the game like some OCD gamefaqs savant, you're likely to miss it. And that means missing out on running around, fighting bosses, and holding knives to guards' throats with the best possible costume combo possible: zombie facepaint, rotting carcass camo (whatever the one is that causes flies to buzz around), and croc cap. All while chomping on a cigar, Nike Fury style. |
