The E3 demos don't show many siuations where enemy AI needed to be expanded, I thought. The one scene where you and your crew are advancing down the street to the scaffolding full of combines which you sneak around -- yeah, that was kind of lackluster. However, most other times it seemed like the Combine and Gordon see each other, Gordon takes a shot and kills said Combine. They didn't seem to try to have the longer drawn out confrontations that would've given the AI more chance to react. Did they do this on purpose to hide the flaws?! Unknown.
EXCEPT!!!!!!! for the scene where Gordon tries to barricade the entrance but one soldier begins shooting through the windows while the other kicks down the door. Was that scripted? Seems like that would be impossible to script, and it would've been the greatest moment in video games for all time if I didn't watch it fifty times already.
I can't wait to play this shit through when it's released. And that part where he fucking rips a radiator off of the wall? It's like the screensaver that says 'enjoy this complimentary cupholder', only when your CD-drive pops for the hee-larious punchline, there's a beer inside.
Anyway, this quote supports what you were saying about the door sequence. Maybe Valve is blending quick snapshots of scripting so you almost don't notice it. So instead of HL1's enjoy this scripted sequence, try not to die formula, maybe the developers implement scripting that adds in little 'actions' secondary to the AI. So the combine tapping the door to see if he can get through is scripted, but the impact when he smashes inside is AI. Or it could be the other way round.
Quote #1
"A big push for us was making the AI more context aware. They needed to be a lot more aware of the player's intentions, they needed to be a lot more aware of the world, and they needed to understand physics in terms of their path finding, and as a source of weapons (in other words "I can smash this to get through" or "I can break something so something else falls on your head). "

So the question is, if good scripting can produce more believeable enemies than "AI" AI, is it worth doing AI at all? And are those Barneys in the E3 trailer advancing along a predefined path, or are they identifying cover some other way and moving towards it?
Yeah, so when the E3 guy said 'I want to emphasise that this isn't scripted', he might've been using air quotes, or something else to out-gay the nerd commentary about 486s, and spreadsheets.
Quote #2
"That was unscripted. There aren't actually scripts in the Half-Life 1 sense. The high level way of thinking about it is that there are actors, actors are in scenes, actors hit their spots, actors deliver lines, and actors have to improvise. Actors are aware at all times of where you are, where you are looking, and what you are doing. In the MOD SDK we'll include a room where everywhere you look, move, and do something that characters will react and respond to show MOD authors how to use the acting system. " |
