I'm starting to wonder if Ang Lee and James Schamus were making a not-so-subtle parody. "Chew that last scene up, Nolte!" Also, I just saw Chopper with Eric Bana, and I think he "Chopper" Read makes a better Hulk than the CGI Hulk. Eric Bana was a stand-up comic!! Australian, mind you, which means he sucked.
If he was (I kinda got that impression during the SoHo performance art section as well), that's gay, and he failed. There's no need to make a parody of superhero movies, they're funny and campy all by themselves... if you made it as hardcore and kickass as possible it would still be a guy in a cape fighting crime. There are many better examples of movies that have fun with their campy genre than this: for comic book movies, Blade is a good example, and so is Darkman. They're both movies that ostensibly take their premises seriously, but everybody on board is having fun, and a certain amount of threat is still generated.
I wonder if the CGI Hulk is what made me really not care about the movie. I was trying my hardest to accept it, but the action never heated up, and I think it was because (like in Spiderman) that when the gloves come off, we're not talking about people anymore, it's now cartoons vs. cartoons. Hmm. |
