japanese game designers by FABIO 06/01/2003, 1:22pm PDT seem to be increasingly trying to make their games into "art" rather than just games. Even great classical series like Metal Gear are being dragged down by this delusion. Remember when RPG's used to just be simple fantasy epics about saving the world from the evil empire and/or demons and not some convoluted morality issue, preachy environmentalist propaganda, or shitty overdone love story? Are videogames the new medium for wannabe movie directors? Someone needs to tell these people to stop trying to be PROFOUND. Usually a game's story is just an accessory to the gameplay; Metal Gear Solid 2 was the first game I played where the story was so godawful it actually dragged down the rest of the game.
