Stating something clearly perceived as a positive side effect as its primary focus is clearly deceptive. Especially when combined with your apparent confusion between Libertarian and Anarchist beliefs; not only do men like Posner regard a military as an essential and moral role of government, but they are often its staunchest proponents.
Really? All the so-called Libertarians I've known viewed professional standing armies as one of the greatest threats of statist encroachment. Were these people merely anarchist poseurs?
Yes. They were. Add to them the large segment of "Bill Maher Libertarians", aka leftists who embrace hedonism, and there are a lot of reasons why Libertarians are reviled as often as they are by all parts of the political spectrum. Part of the problem is that the classical liberal tradition that it represents has gone through so many evolutions, and in very different ways in Europe and America. The other problem is that Libertarians tend to side with the majority parties that most closely resemble their priorities (an American Libertarian who placed social liberty over economic might lean democratic simply as a result of the abortion question-which of course is far from settled within Libertarian thinking), which leaves the actual "Libertarian" party to be run by a fringe group that has no idea what they are doing (hence virtually orthodox Libertarian stances like drug legalization are lumped in with unrelated planks like Pacifism and radical Environmentalism).
However, no one from JS Mill to Bastiat to Hayek to Mises, to modern thinkers like Sowell and Walter Williams, opposes a standing army. Some might disagree with the size or design of said army in its current incarnation, but it is a standard tenet of Libertarian thought that national defense is a legitimate role of government. The most straightforward primer for Libertarian thought I can think of off the top of my head would be Ludwig von Mises' "Classical Liberalism", an argument for the ideology on the basis of utilitarianism and pragmatism, and possibly F.A. Hayek's excellent 'The Road To Serfdom', a historical explanation written in the wake of WWII. |
