I'm not vying for the "TV is stupid I don't watch it" intellectual superman cape at the moment, I mean to ask this as a phillosophical question. Why does virtual reality have to be direct nerve induction? Why can't it just be telling people the same lies convincingly over and over again?
What if George Bush/Dick Cheney/Osama Bin Laden/Saddam Hussein/et al are just actors? People base their styles, political views, hell, their lives off TV and we all trust the sensory input it gives us to be correct. Aside from TeeVee and TEH INTERWEB, how the hell do we know anything about what's happening in Iraq, or even if that country still exists? How do we know the Sopranos isn't a real documentary?
If TeeVee told us everything was fine and happy, would people believe it or would entire crops be lost, only to be saved by TeeVee terror alert warnings that say to seal your house in duct tape and spend all your time watching the TeeVee in a state of extreme anxiety?
I guess this works great as a theory, provided you are willing to assume that everyone is as stupid and easily fooled as you are. That's a dangerous assumption, though - not that you'd know. But take it from me on trust, hm? |
