Maybe it's too easy to criticize because I've never written netcode but how can people *WHO ARE GETTING PAID* not know to a) use UDP, b) use Asynchronous Sockets for your client and Overlapped I/O for your server, and c) minimize amount of information sent where possible?
You would think that MMORPG programmers would understand that netcode is MORE IMPORTANT than graphics for their product, and that most of the physics/AI energies of a 'normal' game can be transferred to it - but in many products there is little evidence of this happening and to some extent the opposite.
This article is one I'm sure most people have read: it's the X-Wing team moping about how the internet sucks (hint to Peter Lincroft: it doesn't). Back when they released this game it used TCP/IP which was, not suprisingly, boneheaded and totally fucked things up. I believe in that article they note that Quake World helped them realize the error of their ways. It amazes me that anyone used TCP/IP(Carmack did as well, it should be noted, but by the time the real QW came out he had fixed this mistake), but maybe that's because I'd started studying networking after this was all figured out or maybe it was because at that point game programmers didn't know anything about the internet; I don't know.
On a different note: what happened to GamersAngst? It appears to have fallen off the face of the earth...
