That is exactly what I fucking said. This is the part where you mumble a bit, bow your head with big drippy tears running down your face and say, "I can't read."
Seriously - how stupid are you? His clock-independence work for Keen was *truly* revolutionary for its time. Everything else from BSP trees on out has been drawn from existing papers on the subject or previously existed in some crude form beforehand that he simply did far better. There really is no argument to a string of facts he has himself stated. As for the reverse, I specifically stated I needed to read more on Doom 3's tech before I could say anything - my understanding though (based on what he said) is that this idea emerged from a few different places simultaneously.

I'm not very stupid, thanks for asking.
You say "taking abstract ideas and applying them to a real-time game engine" like it's something anyone could have done if they cared enough. What's your definition of innovation? Wasn't pretty much EVERYTHING an abstract idea at one time or another before someone "implemented" it, from the PC to the Internet to lousy message board code? How the hell was BSP not revolutionary for its time? Because sooner or later it would have been invented anyway? Does that mean if and when time travel is invented, the guy will be considered a fucking implementer of BINRO'S THEORY?
You're arguing semantics here, when the fact is that Doom, Quake, Quake II, Quake 3A, and by ALL indications Doom III have advanced real-time 3D gaming exponentially. The first article on the front page of this ridiculous site is a review of a MOD of a game built directly from Carmack's code. Understand?
The entire industry moves forward every time Carmack releases a new engine, so how is it exactly that everyone would be arriving at the same place if he weren't around? It doesn't hold water, you know it doesn't hold water, and your ridiculous attempts to refute my argument by asking me what I do for a living shows you've given up already. |
