If you don't know anything about where it came from, then yeah, eating it is the only way to tell. I knew exactly what was put into mine, or rather, what wasn't. You have to start supporting terrorism hanging out with drug dealers to really figure that stuff out, which is something of which I'm neither proud nor ashamed.
I've even encountered shrooms that weren't clean. They were dipped in...something. I don't remember a good portion of that day.
