The thing that really surprised me was that the subplots with Angel and Matsuka went nowhere. In Breaking Bad, every sub plot meant something and contributed to the work as a whole. (Except for Marie's shoplifting.) The stuff in Dexter with those two (and Quinn) had nothing to do with Dexter, had nothing to do with any larger plots that made up the basis of a season and could be almost completely removed from each episode with no loss to the greater story they were trying to tell about Dexter himself.
They had a show named after a character. The other characters exist because they have something to do with the eponymous character. But not here. It was amazingly incompetent. And everything I remember reading from the writers and show runners has them coming off like they think they did an amazing job.
