dropping Dr Danco.

I can see where the show runners might have have looked at the Dr Danco plot from the books and considered it to be too dark, even for pay TV. However, in the case of Dexter, dropping a plot for being too dark represents an unrecoverable failure of nerve.

(I'm not a Game of Thrones person either but from what I understand the show is even darker than the books.)

The way the 2nd Dexter novel removes Doakes - by maiming and dismembering him but not killing him - could have been used to set up a later season where Doakes somehow manages to overcome his handicaps and comes after Dexter again.
