I have a lot of problems with the enemy setup. For some reason, they decided that the fastest enemies should be camouflaged rock critters that charge without any warmup and explode for a full heart's worth of damage. Later on in levels 7 and 8, they fly : (
After the first boss on level 4, the game pretty much dumps every throwaway enemy at you. FIVE additional types of turret enemies start spawning (from levels 1-4 there's only two), all of which fire at you instantly with no warmup time (the turrets have a little wind up animation, but they start shooting about halfway through it). Tower of Guns at least gave you 1-2 seconds after walking in a room to assess the situation, plus it was actually possible to tell turrets apart BEFORE they started shooting.
The final boss room is kinda broken for now since it starts out with about 10 enemies and starts to spawn more right away (up til then you'll never really see more than 4 enemies on screen at once), so your FPS will dip to something low enough to allow everything in the room to teleport over and kill you within seconds.
I like that this is the first roguelike that really stresses player skill over the RNG. Part of that's because most of the items are useless, but even with a perfect loadout you're likely to die if you don't know what you're doing. Tower of Guns was surprisingly number based, but this keeps everything nice and simple. |
