But they're not usually as important as they are in HB. Most enemies in Dark Souls, for example, give off some kind of sound before you hear them, but there's also shadows and giant glowing messages that say, "Ambush left" so it's just one of many. You might be at a slight disadvantage, but I can only think of a few games where you'll be in trouble if you just turn the sound off and play some podcasts. The Bit.Trip games maybe, but those are more bullshit pixel perfect jumps than anything.
I think it stems from the fact that if you quickly look away from the screen to watch TV or something, you can snap right back and get oriented pretty easily. I usually find that hard to do with sound since I'm more likely to try and focus on both, have it come in as a huge mess, and not gain anything from any source. Focusing your hearing is a lesser used skill, so when it's forced in a videogame, it's way more noticeable. |
