OK, I realize that probably nobody gives a shit about this, since Heart of the Swarm has been out for months already, and any Starcraft fans out there have probably already bought it. But just because, I figure I'll give my impressions.
The single-player is disappointing in this one. All the missions are really easy. It has become a lot more like Diablo or one of those other "click to win" type games. I have a friend who has beaten almost every mission on the hardest difficulty (something I do not think I will have the patience to do) and he agrees with me on this. Maybe this was a deliberate choice to try to expand the appeal of the game. I still feel like it was a mistake, though.
I agree with the other folks here who are saying that the story sucks. I mean, Starcraft was never exactly Shakespeare, and I wasn't expecting that. But I just found myself not giving a shit about any of the characters, skipping cutscenes because the dialog was just so bad. At least Wings of Liberty had some interesting characters, like Tydus. The characters in HotS might as well be called "Zerg number 1" and "Zerg number 2." I mean, what happened to interesting Zerg characters like Zasz or Samir Duran? I guess Blizzard forgot how to write them.
I also think it's funny how all the important female characters are Zerg. Those evil, disgusting women. Always squirting blood, creating "broodlings," and being giant bitches. I guess they know their audience well.
Jonesy says that nobody should care about the single player. I see where he is coming from, but I'm going to disagree. I feel like the single player is important. If it does nothing else, it at least helps more people get into the game. Good single-player missions are kind of like puzzles, because you have to figure out what to do. It requires skills different from those demanded by multiplayer. Unfortunately, like I mentioned earlier, the single player in this one is closer to Diablo than to a puzzle game. You just keep clicking...
I've played a bit of multiplayer, not too much yet. I used to be in gold league in WoL, but I haven't played in a while so I probably suck at this point. I miss the old user interface from the Brood War days. It felt a lot more like entering a chaotic IRC chat room back then. Now, it feels cold and antiseptic. You never get a chance to talk to anyone until you try to enter a game. And even then, a lot of (custom) games seem to abort before they start, because the host can't find enough people. Playing a standard melee game works well, at least. I'm curious whether Protoss will prove to be OP (at lower levels of play, at least), with the new long-range air attack ships. I can't really confirm or deny that yet, though. |
