Until you start realizing what it takes to beat the final boss. What gets you to the end and what lets you beat the boss is a GIANT gap. Some sort of teleporting bomb and/or boarding parties combined with tanking is the only strategy that will work, unless the RNG is very very generous and gives you a full loadout of the best laser (MKII burst).

You have an illusion that all the different ships lend to varied approaches, but really the only thing that matters is tanking, the number of weapon slots, and starting weapon to give you an early advantage (good fucking luck winning with the stealth cruiser).

Never, ever play on normal instead of easy.
