If you stay away from strategy guides. by Mischief Maker 01/26/2013, 10:22am PST
The fun is figuring out the puzzle of how to survive. Here are my beginner tips, learn the rest for yourself and you'll get your fun.

Don't even attempt normal difficulty until you've already beaten "easy."

Every time you travel to a star, the rebel fleet advances from left to right. If the star is in a nebula, they advance more slowly.

There is a boss at the end of the game. You're not just trying to reach home, you're powering up to be able to take on that boss. Scour systems for all the scrap and equipment you can grab until the rebel fleet forces you out.

Some "choose your own adventure" encounters will screw you every time if you don't have a necessary crewmember/piece of equipment. If you don't have a choice in blue, sometimes it's wiser just to leave.

The movie mindset you should be in for this game is Star Trek 2. Battles are more about hitting critical subsystems and crippling the enemy's ability to strike back effectively than slugging each other back and forth.

The damage dealt by beam weapons is based on the number of rooms it passes through, even if it just hits a tiny corner. Also a 2 dmg beam will still do damage against an enemy whose shield is down to 1.

Fires can be put out by crewmembers (watch their health) or by opening airlock doors and draining the oxygen from the affected room.

If an invasion party teleports to your ship, you want to fight them in the medbay, which gives you the advantage (if it's powered).

With the default ship, before you even make your first jump, turn off your medbay and max engine power, then put a crewmember in engineering. This gives you a 20% dodge rate. Put another crewmember into weapons to increase weapon rechage. NEVER leave the bridge unmanned during a fight or your dodge rate drops to 0%.

That should be enough to get you started and puzzle out the game. No, it's not perfectly balanced, and if you go to gamefaqs they WILL ruin the game for you.
