Got my first PvP kill by invading the undead church. I guess it was a guy even newer to how stuff worked, because he seemed to think standing with shield up would block everything. I carry around the 2H reinforced club against npc pikemen for that exact reason!
For PvE, just killed the gargoyle bosses and rung the first bell.
New favorite weapon: Estoc. A regular attack exactly like the rapier but a strong attack that's long range AoE sweeping. The best of both worlds.
Things I wish I knew from the start:
-NPCs. This was a bonehead move on my part, but it didn't occur to me you had to talk to them more than once to get important stuff from them. Missed out on the white soap stone until I read its location in a wiki.
- leveling. Or rather, don't. I take it new players level their stats every chance they get because there's nothing else to spend on and you don't want to lose your souls. Now I realized that going to level 15 while still doing the undead burg was a big mistake. Dump that shit into equipment buffing, buying shards as a way to "bank" my souls. I imagine that the cheapest PvP twinks are running around at minimal level carrying end game equipment.
Things I wish were different: flexibility. Specifically when it comes to magic. Unless you start out with the right class, then you come across useful magic way too late for most first time players to bother investing in it. The first blacksmith selling a catalyst is extremely easy to miss (dude in a cell, near the ghost ruins that no sane new player would do over the undead burg) and the only faith spells I've found are a heal a homeward spell.
Things I'm pondering: What stats to level when I get around to it. So far Dex doesn't seem worth it. I have yet to find a weapon that has a large Dex bonus over Str (except the bow); usually they're about the same grade. Meanwhile there are plenty of useful weapons that rely on a minimum Str. Then there's Endurance and Vitality seeming better than either of those. |
