Vampire:Bloodlines is the only PC RPG of recent years I'd wholeheartedly recommend. Get the patch, watch out for bugs, you know the (or)deal with Troika titles. Although, unlike other Troika games, it motherfucking rocks. All the complaints I had about it were already covered by Fabio here, and they're hardly deal-breakers.
I like KOTOR 1, but it's arguably waaaaaay too easy. You almost have to purposefully develop your characters in as nonsensical a manner as possible to make this game a challenge. I have yet to try the sequel but hear it's a better pure game while also being very buggy.
Gothic 2 is seemingly excellent but I haven't gotten to play it nearly as much as I'd like.
Arcanum lulled me to sleep. Avoid it.
ToEE had great combat and was boring otherwise. A lot like the Icewind Dales, IMO. Worthy of a purchase, especially at budget prices, but don't go in hoping to have your face rocked right off of your head.
On consoles...
Disgaea is the best time-sink ever and is legitimately funny. How often does that happen with games? Never? I'm not sure it's as good as Anachronox in that regard, but it's a far better game otherwise. Only Diablo 2 has this kind of infinite replayability.
SMT:Nocturne is maybe the second-best such time-sink, and while it doesn't have nearly as good a sense of humor, the story is far more interesting. The art style, while anime-based, is somewhat abstract/minimalist and is a great change of pace from most games. The only problem with it is that the combat system means you'll endure a lot of trial-and-error. Almost every new "area" you explore will throw a new set of enemies at you that'll demand you reconfigure your party somehow, and you won't know how until after you get slaughtered and observe why that happened.
Unless Bioware fails us, the upcoming Jade Empire for the XBox should rock. Supposedly there may NOT be a PC port because the combat is rather arcadey - I've heard "Soul Calibur-lite" thrown around a lot - and for whatever crazy reason that will apparently turn off PC gamers. But hey, that may prevent it from becoming the "click-fest" that most other RPGs feel like during combat. I must also admit I'm a sucker for supposedly authentic Oriental flava (and I don't mean faggy anime shit either, I mean drug-crazed-looking demons, dragons with beards, heroes who in one scene will be seen practicing playing a lute and in the next scene will use the strings of that lute to lop off opponents' heads, or at least strangle them). I don't even know much if anything about real Oriental mythologies - I'm mostly just going by what I saw in the old D&D Deities & Demigods books and so forth. Anyway, this has burned me before thanks to the worst action-RPG ever made (Throne Of Darkness) and the second-worst action-RPG ever made (Blade & Sword), but it's Bioware! so I'm confident it will be good at the very worst. |
