I recently came to the conclusion that I hate the Dark Spire. I REALLY hate the dark spire. I admire its artwork but fuck this game. Why dangle 10 character classes in front of me when you can only play this game seriously with a Samurai, a Wizard, and two Druids? Unless everyone in your team is lobbing fireballs, you'll be spending hours and hours holding down the button to speed through the combat flavor text.

But it wasn't even the party lineup that broke the game for me. It was when I found out that the cheap Epee sword is better than the super expensive katana. Why? Multiple attacks. How would you know this? Buy a strategy guide.

Playing The Dark Spire really really reinforced for me how fantastic Phantasy Star 2 was for challenging RPG design. There were never areas of "magical darkness," no floor spinners, no one-way doors, no invisible pits. You always had a clear view of your party and the immediate surroundings. Furthermore, two of the earliest spells the main character learns are the escape dungeon and return to town spells. Nothing in the interface or your view of the gameworld was designed to thwart the player. You got lost in the dungeons because they were legitimate mazes. What a goddamn shame the series went all Final Fantasy drool-bib simple with PS4 before degenerating into an MMORPG.

Remember my review of The Spirit Engine 2? That game has since gone freeware and I highly recommend you give that game a thorough playthrough because it's one of the best RPGs I've ever played in terms of combat engine that wasn't a full blown SRPG. Not just in how the combat engine is made, but how throughout the game you are constantly presented with enemies that require a brand new strategy each.

PROTIP: Don't fuck around with scripting, that's the one weak point of the game. Re-map pause to a convenient key (and clear out rotate) and issue your orders one move at a time, like firing weapons in FTL.
