There's a thought out there that, somewhere between 1990 and 2000, big themes fell out of fashion. There's been a move away from the kind of Wagnerian romantic themes with their leitmotifs for characters and all that jazz, towards more minimalistic, backgroundy stuff a la Clint Mansell's theme for Requiem For A Dream.
John Williams - whose earlier scores buy into the leitmotif thing like he's literally an opera composer - just wasn't made for these times. Also, give the dude a break, he's like a million years old. |
