You have got to be the biggest fag, I dunno, on the planet?
Mech Warrior 4: Vengance full version
Published by Microsoft, developed by FASA/Microsoft

The game is awesome. Just awesome. I play in 1st person mode, even though it restricts some of your view. I just like this game so much.
Pros:
If there would be any other game that I would pay $50 for, it would be Half Life, but Half Life wasn't 2 discs. When it came right down to it, I didn't want to have to wait a month or a year just to pay $10 less. That's how much the demo impressed me.
But the demo was only one mission, and it didn't include a lot of the features of the full game. There was one map, a snowy mountain ridge map, and it was simply ok.
I really don't know where to begin. [ed note: Josh never knows where to begin, BECAUSE HE'S A FUCKING MORON] This game actually has a certain climate where lightning strikes right in front of your face, as missles rain down on you.
I read the reviews for the other three MW games, and they all look pretty lacking. While they were probably fun for their time, this new MW just seems to trump every feature the previous games had. Even the coolant distribution is better (apparently in MW3, you could only flush the coolant 3 times and then it ran out).
Some reviewers had a problem where MW4 only allowed certain weapons to be attached to certain hardpoints as opposed to the old MW games that had all omni hardpoints. I couldn't really care less, and I think it makes customization a bit more interesting.
All the mechs in this game are fantastic. I guess this would be thanks to the fact that the graphics are just beautiful. Even with my wimpy old machine, I could run this game in pretty high settings without a frame loss. I think this is partly because the game engine will allow a pretty good minimum framerate by setting down certain effects and such.
The graphics. Mmmm. If you have a powerhouse machine like a 700, playing this game with all the graphical capabilities on full blast might stop your heart.
The enemy AI is pretty damn good, as is the friendly AI. Your lancemates (other mech pilots) will gain experience based on how many missions they join. And while the only skill they would have that I would judge them on would be "gunnery," it's still cool.
I don't really have to say this, but mech customization is pretty extensive. You get to equip weapons, armor, engines (running speed) and then extra cool trinkets like anti missle systems and jump jets and such.
This game is also pretty damn long. I am a Half Life verteran (which is what my pilot registry name is: Half Life Veteran) and I died on about half the missions. Especially when I wasn't stoned. There's 30 missions in all, and they're a 5-10 minute play each for myself, being the HALF LIFE VETERAN THAT I AM. You will probably need about a month to beat each mission. You suck.
One of the things I don't put a lot of faith into for games is game music. When done right, game music simply sets a tone or hangs in the backround, playing along to your personal struggle to save the world or whatever. But I must say, the music in this game is beautiful. There's a massive range of moods that the music sets, and different songs are used throughout the missions. It's really impressive.
One other really important part of the game is the multiplayer part. And this is what's amazing. Aparently, the game uses Zoneplay, but it's not laggy and joining a game is as easy as it could possibly be, which is a surprise.
Cons:
Just a few minor things. Apparently the game is a little buggy, but nowhere near as bad as Crimson Skies was. I had 2 crashes in about 6 straight days of playing, only one made me hit reset, and I really haven't had any other problems with the game other than that. But apparently, there are other people with more severe problems. A good idea for people wanting to buy the game would be to look up the forums for these problems.
When you start the game, all your mechs and extra weapons must be aquired. While this isn't a con, extra mech hulls and useless extra weapons can't be sold or traded or anything. It would have been nice to put the 20 some extra small and medium mech frames into something useful, like some kind of periphrial lance. I could load them up with the 90 inferior machine cannons and small pulse lasers and such, which would be helpful to the gameplay in some small way. Perhaps in the form of a handful of extra base defenders, or a larger squad of mechs by friendly mech poitions that you find in the game.
One final con is that you can't tell which weapons or weapon groups are currently selected. In order to find out you have to fire them, and near the end of the game you will find that firing your weapons uselessly will be a giant waste and could get you killed due to an overheat shutdown thing.
Also extra, when you play on multiplayer, it doesn't show how many people are on certain teams, so you have to count them up. That kinda sucks, but it's really kind of minor.
Overall:
Worth spending my weed money for this game. I almost feel bad, because this game ended up being longer and more enjoyable than Elite Force.

Jim Croce - I Got A Name.mp3
I saw Jsoh play the demo once, and I was like, BORING because it was one "instant action" map where you spawn a couple enemy mechs and shoot them and then the game ends. So he bought the full game on his own and I played it and it's the best Mechwarrior game ever. I'm not saying I think it's the best Mechwarrior game ever, it just is, because it is, objectively. But I didn't know that until I played the game. I haven't played any of the other Mechwarrior games, and only a pussy or FAGGOT would think I would have to because they'd all be Mechwarrior games, but older and not as advanced therefore inherently inferior.
You know, about a year ago I thought it would be cool to pick up Stunt Race FX because I thought it was so awesome way back when in the days when I'd play it while listening to some great Rush songs. I tried it, and it's pointless because it's just another 3D racing game like the 50 billion that have been released since then and are better. Even the original quirks that were put in the game don't make it any better or less dated. So, older Mechwarrior games are inherently dated and pointless walking your Doom sprites shaped like a mech along a flat untextured polygon, and then there's Mechwarrior 4 which is improved over all previous games in every possible way. And you don't like that, because, what, you're a huge fuckin queer? Answer: yes. |
