I'd say subtracting a point or two from most of the reviews to get the actual score is about right. To their credit they're the only professional reviewers I know of that rightfully called Crystal Chronicles on the suckage (yet still gave it a 7, so just subtract 2). The high profile titles are a different story though; you simply can't trust a word of them (Metal Gear Solid 3: a 9.5 masterpiece, etc.). They also fall prey to the professional review trend of writing how much Xenogears 2 sucks ("this game is a dropped ball of Devil May Cry 2 proportions") and then going on to give a score of 7.75.
See, I liked MGS3 overall, but I still would have never given it over an 7.5/8. Then again, they tend to reserved the lower ranges (below 7) for items that are catastrophically bad, so I'd say the real trick is to regard it as a 5 point scale starting at 5.x . 6 is bad. 7 mediocre, 8 ok, 9 good, 10 is (apparently) Resident Evil 4.
Also, the Xenosaga 2 review was written by people that liked the first one. Apparently, since they draw it as a contrast to the sequel, X1 had a deep combat system, fascinating plot, etc. Is this a matter of taste or just stupidity? I really can't tell.
The humor is about Maxim level, which is to say it's bad, but not wrist slittingly Coconut Monkey bad, and it still trumps anything ever written by a Mysterio.
I kind of enjoy the purple prose. It's like a VH1 countdown of 80's and early 90's pop culture analogies. I feel so dated. :( |
