My guess is that people who dislike DOA are people who can't stand it when their friends beat them at a game they bought, because the learning curve on DOA is not big at all and, at the same time, it's not a button masher like Universe Of Flashing Sprites Versus Capcom 8. It's a lot of fun and delightfully exploitative, and, of course, I particularly appreciate the thoughtfulness of the designers who threw in exploited men along with the usual rank-and-file half-nekkid chicks. The only real problem is that the controls seem peculiarly sludgy after the elegant and responsive controls in SC2.

I hope nobody reads those words aloud, because they're so wrong the universe might collapse. DOA is the definitive 3d button masher. It makes Tekken look like open heart surgery.
