Virtua Tennis was a revolution of how to approach making sports games because they made the act of hitting the ball NOT the game. It's understood that tennis players can hit the ball, so just move your little dude to the right spot and press the button -- your shot will be in bounds and over the net. The depth actually comes from the sport of tennis itself; serve and volley, pull your opponent off the line, date Mandy Moore. Virtua Tennis is awesome.
Similarly Dead or Alive's ease of entry doesn't have to mean that you don't have exciting matches. It means that the playing field is somewhat level, and you are playing against the other player, not a set of rules as devised by the developer. The depth comes from fighting another person, reading their moves, discovering their weaknesses. Mindgames! That the entry fee to this level of fighting is LOWER than more complex games shouldn't disgust people. But it does. It's just different. It's a different game, heaven forbid.
Much like when some retard said here (in the before-times when SB had not deleted the forum because Veronica fucked Umberto) that Escape from Butcher Bay wasn't going to be a great game because the previews noted it's lack of sniper rifle, multiplayer and wide open spaces. It's a prejudice, and as I people who know me will tell you, I hate prejudices. It makes my heart sad. An FPS without a sniper rifle CAN be fun, and a fighting game without trigonometry can be "deep".
Finally, I think people understate the depth of DOA. Limbo stuns, sidestep attacks, slippery surfaces, walls (ceilings!), elevation, juggles, attack delays, and practically no canned combos... It's not exactly Mortal Kombat. Let's learn Gen-Fu together, people.
