I think you might have me confused with a genius or at least a go-getter :( by Jerry Whorebach 12/05/2009, 6:12pm PST
My problem with long, boring things like Forrest Gump and Mass Effect isn't that they're too easy for my giant throbbing robot brain to solve. It's that they're a waste of time, even for someone whose time is essentially unlimited. For example: my favourite game ever is Super Mario Bros. - not the most difficult game in the world, but quite possibly the most fun. I happen to think (and apparently some Japanese guy agrees with me? I dunno let's read the interview again) that the continue system had something to do with that. Maybe playing the easy parts of games once and the incredibly frustrating parts twenty times isn't as enjoyable as conventional wisdom dictates? Maybe padding games with ten times as much content as they really need means some of that content won't be up to the same high standards as the rest? Maybe mastering a short level can be more fun than skating through a long one by the skin of your teeth, comforted by the knowledge that you'll never have to do it again (unless you lose your memory card)?

I know I usually rail about long, boring games, but short, frustrating ones can be just as bad. Who wants to always have to play at the very limits of their ability? Besides highschool graduates like Mischief Maker? No one, and I think his high score challenges bear that out. Ultimately, if a game isn't fun, I'm not going to play it. If it is fun, I'm going to want to play the shit out of it. Just play it to within an inch of its life. So basically what I'm looking for is a game that's easy to get into, hard to master, and never stops being fun. Is that so damn unreasonable?
