I'm 100% in agreement with Miyamoto here. All my favourite 360 games, from Pac-Man Cunt's Special to Borza Motorboring, revolve around playing the same boards over and over again until you can do them in your sleep. Dead Rising takes it a step further, encouraging you to replay the entire GAME if you fuck up even a little. I love it! I'd rather play one hour of Super Mario Bros. twenty times than twenty hours of Mass Effect even once. I guess a large part of what I look for in games is the opportunity to master them, just fucking dominate the fuck out of them with my huge tiny erection, and while this used to be considered normal at one time (and was probably part of what attracted me to gaming in the first place), it's since fallen out of favour. That's fine, I realize people play games for all sorts of different reasons - some like the stories, some like making numbers go up, some like blasting sand niggers in the face and watching their limp bodies flop around like rag dolls. What bothers me is when designers start catering exclusively to these types, by turning perfectly good games into Diablo or Half-Life or whatever interactive Forrest Gump the professional critics are slobbering over this year. Case in point: the unlimited rewind feature in Forza 3, which is supposed to make learning the tracks a thing of the past. There's going to come a day when course design in that series is reduced to one long procedurally-generated road, liberally sprinkled with orcs and treasure chests and the occasional branching path to nowhere. And that's fucking tragic. |
