MGS3's close quarters combat system needs a walkthrough all by itself by FABIO 01/16/2005, 1:18am PST
Sneak up behind guard, tap (but not POUND) circle.

To throw, hold analog stick in direction and press circle again.

To hold, hold down circle lightly.

If at any time you hold down circle slightly more than lightly, you will cut the guard's throat.

Tap circle lightly (not hard) to choke and put guard to sleep. Tap too much and you break his neck.

Pressing square can also be used to cut throat.

Press L3 (while holding down circle lightly, not hard) to interrogate guard.

Move the left analog stick (while still holding down circle, but not hard) to drag guard around.

Press R1 to switch to first person mode.

Hold down square in first person mode (holding down R1) to bring up weapon.

Let go of square while still holding down R1 to fire weapon.

Let go of square gently to lower weapon without firing.

I'm totally not making any of this up. This is all practically verbatum from the close quarters combat section of the manual. You will fail guarenteed the first few times you try these. The fact that you're fucked if you get discovered for the first third of the game will totally discourage you from experimenting.
