One of my favorite games was The Bards Tale (1985).
Last summer I wanted to play again but found it hard to
aquire. I tried emulators, dosbox, etc. but nothing really
worked. So then I downloaded the demo for Devil Whisky
by Shifting Suns Studios. I'm not going to write a review
for it, but basically it failed to satisfy this Bards Tale fan.
Next, I looked at the remake of The Bards Tale by inXile
Entertainment. One look at the real-time, 3rd person,
hack and slash was enough! If there was no game
around that was close enough to the original Bards Tale
for my taste, then I was going to make one! And there
you have it.

Yeah, Devil Whiskey did not fare too well with people who put in hard-line carriage returns after 40 characters. The first puzzle of the game is something like, "what does mode 80 do on the PC?" and if you get it wrong it (etc).

... Wait, did this same guy make the game you linked to? Warrior's Tale? Jesus Christ! I was all set to give the guy you quoted shit for not seeing the essential genius of DW, but if he went and made his own Bard's Tale-style game, that's amazing. The one annoying part of DW is that the combat music gets old quick, but I found I was so immersed, I hardly noticed it. Only when other people were in the room did it come up as a problem.

Hey, MM, send me an e-mail at beaver@zombieworld.com when you get a chance. I got something I need to send you.

My only complaint is that the author is obviously left-handed since movement is only done using the IJKL method.

Good grief. You can't remap controls, can you? I'm gonna download that game tonight either way, but still. Excellent find, and thanks for the heads-up.
