I tl;dred the shit out of this on qt3, but save yourself that agony. I would say from my limited understanding that it's very realistic, particularly at the points where many civilians would stop believing. Like Jarhead (only in this one sense), the parts of it that work for me are in the details.
At the same time, I don't think Simon's going for artificial entertainment value on top of what Evan Wright (the guy who did the book/RS articles) has already produced, so I don't know how much fun it is to watch unless you are already into the subject matter. The book was great and extensively corroborated, although some people disagree with what he chooses to focus on.
