In local slang an "uparmored" humvee refers to an M1114 - a humvee that was manufactured with extra armor and has slide down windows, air-conditioning, a better engine and ride like a damned cadillac:


A "ghetto", "hooptie", or "haji-rigged" humvee is a regular humvee with a bunch of crazy sheet metal welded on. A lot of them have Armox sheet metal on the sides which is supposed to be better than regular armor plate. I've never seen Armox hit by anything so I have no idea. I do know that diamond plate sheet metal is next to useless and is good for only looks.

The add-on armor kits that most of the haji-rigged humvees have is really good. And easy to install. It's just armored doors, windshield and some armor plate for the sides and back:


The kits and the uparmored humvees really work well. I've only seen one door penetrated (on an M1114) and that one had a 155 shell go off right next to it.

You see all kinds of wacky armoring around here. Yesterday I saw two big rig tractors with these monster turrets built up on top of the trailer hitch and rising about 3-4 feet over the cab. Huge bunker like fighting positions built in the back of 5 ton trucks. I've even seen a turret built into the back of a humvee with bicycle pedals built into it so the gunner could rotate the turret with his feet.

In my squad I currently have one scout humvee (four-door turtleback with a turret) with the add-on kit and a Cav shield for the gunner, and one cargo humvee (two-door with a pickup bed) with the add-on kit, Armox plates on the sides of the bed, a Rat Patrol pintle for the .50 cal, and 3 mounts (1 on back and 1 on each side) for a SAW. Most of the sandbags have disintigrated by now, or replaced by armor plate.

This whole thing is really a non issue. All the troops that need them (the guys that are doing patrols and convoys every day) have armored humvees. A lot of humvees just drive around inside camp, so they don't need any add-on armor. This guy is probably just some fucking pogue that's never going to leave the wire. And now he is shitting his pants because he has to drive into big bad Iraq tomorrow and he thought he joined the Army just to be a dental hygienist.

I knew Rumsfeld was a good guy.
