So far, the only actual true story about the Iraq war, which makes sense with it being a documentary.
It's about army guys who live out of one of Uday's old palaces, damaged by a bomb but apparently still livable. It has a fawkin swimming pool in the back. The goal of the movie is pretty much to show the occupation, after the war ended, and how the troops have to become the police in a way. Mostly you get to see American troops as the goofing around army guys they are, hanging around in Uday's pool and relaxing on the off hours, then raiding and arresting terror suspects. The documentary mentions most of the suspects will go to Abu Grayb, which makes you realize how that's probably fucked up, considering that a couple of them are either innocent or actually supported or helped interpret for the army guys. There are several moments where people are arrested but then let go, and some who helped the troops with information or interpretation turn out to have joined the insurgency months later. There are scenes where kids seem to crowd the army pals like they think they're cool, and others where people throw rocks at their humvees.
The whole view of the documentary is pretty straight up, and doesn't make the war look and better or worse than it is. The army guys probably couldn't possibly come off looking any better, unless you don't like the idea of the black soldiers rapping about stuff they do in the war and bullets and shooting, then I guess you might like them a little less. There are plenty of scenes of raps that they came up with, and many many other scenes of people noodling on guitars in their free time, goofing around with each other or Iraqis that they've made friends with.
If you're going to see any movie about the second Iraq war it should be this one. NOT TO GO OUT ON A LIMB, but I doubt that will change even after I've seen the other 5 movies. |
