Pool of Radiance and the "Gold Box" SSI games were all first edition. Pool of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds were terrific, IMO. Secret of the Silver Blades was an unplayable slogfest. Dunno about Pools of Darkness since I never got very far in it.

I can't disagree hard enough about the idea that 3rd edition isn't as good as 1st or 2nd, though. "Cluttered up", MFFE? Well maybe the supposedly slimmed down 4th edition will be more to your tastes.
