It was actually more a stab at how idiotic the UNSC seems in HALO 1 and 2 in terms of tactics, kind of like Verhoeven's vision of a bunch of guys in nothing but cheap-looking kevlar and helmets going up against gigantic fucking arachnids and gigantic slow-ass M.I. Carriers flying in tightly packed slow-as-shit formations while gigantic balls of blue shit rocket out of the atmosphere.
One of my first thoughts on Halo 3 was "Huh, finally, humanity has finally discovered combined arms tactics", noting that whenever the Covenant showed up to fuck up their shit with Scarabs or Wraiths they usually had a wing of Hornets, and a couple of tanks or guys with rocket launchers ready unlike before where they just stood around and got massacred.
Yeah, I know Verhoeven intended it because he had a big hatred for Heinlein's work, but I mostly attribute that to him being born only a couple of years before Nazis were goose-stepping through Amsterdam. My fault for not being more precise.
Yeah, I can see that yours was a specifically tactical/strategic critique, with a hint of the old saw about "the cheesiness" of ST armor/weapons. Nevertheless, the superficial similarities between Halo's dumbassery and Verhoeven's specifically ironic, carefully selected satirical decisions are only appropriate if you attach an explicit disclaimer describing your awareness of that distinction, which you appear to be struggling towards now.
I'm not sure what you mean with the nazi reference. I mean, I'm sure Verhoeven's past has a lot to do with his outlook on Heinlein, but I don't see that as detracting from the excellence of his critique of that fascist motherfucker. And I'm not just saying that because for a while there after 9/11 Heinlein quotes were neck a neck with Orwell quotes for being used to justify retarded jingoism. I'm saying that because even now skimming that book makes me want to punch babies. And by excellence of the critique, I don't mean the monocle polishing bullshit that it could have been. I mean the clear and present understanding that the only way to narrate the book's ridiculousness was to go for the full monty. |
