I didn't say RTS was trivial as far as game genres go, and far be it for me to contend that the Korean stereotype gamer is unskilled. I doubt I could be that good or anywhere near it even if I was inclined to spend that much time playing Starcraft. That is not my point.
My point, which I thought was pretty obvious, is that there is a point past which many perfectly normal, competent gamers simply lose interest in competing. With Korean dominance of Starcraft as a shining example of the high end and obnoxious 12 year olds who memorize every multiplayer level in Halo as the low end, even people with few Real Life reasons not to game as often as they like feel diminishing returns when playing a video game turns into the equivalent of a varsity level sport, with all of the baggage that comes with that.

Any game played at a high enough level is going to be boring to a patzer, which is what these whining douchebags are. Boo hoo! He beat me by hitting the ball to a place I can't reach over and over again. How is that fun? Maybe if you could figure out how to return a fucking serve the game wouldn't appear to be so "broken". Hitting the ball hard isn't the point of tennis, it's the point at which tennis begins. If you're playing someone who can hit hard then being able to hit hard is the entry fee you have to muster before the actual game, the deep game, the interesting high-level game even starts.
That's interesting that Monty also used a tennis analogy. I just had it on my mind thanks to Virtua Tennis 3 and the mothafucking drop shots in that game. Either way, I think you have me confused with someone who argued that the games were "broken" as a result of being dominated by high level players. That is not what is implied by the PA post, either. It's just that the game is more fun for those of us only marginally interested in paying the entry fee before it is raised to astronomical levels by true believers. I don't want to memorize levels, spawn points, or exact weapon physics and tactics. I started down that path in CS, realized I was having proportionately little fun in return for the investment, and eventually moved on to other games.
Uninterestingly enough, I have little problem sinking time into demanding single player games. I don't think it has to do with raw measures of competence, but then there's very few straightforward "skill test" games that I enjoy, apart from maybe Guitar Hero and Ouendan. |
