But I'll take your word for it.

Yeah, there's definitely room for The Ultimate Smear in this one, although I would say that is something really more applicable to single player games. If you find yourself passing on a lot of major single player games because the curve is too much for you, then I would say you need to do some sucking at video games soul searching.
But I really think multiplayer is altogether a different animal. Perhaps things have changed radically since Counterstrike first burned me off of anonymous online multiplayer, but it seems to me that past a certain point in an online game's evolution, the mid to upper ranges of skill become overpopulated with people who don't mind winning, over and over again, with lowest common denominator tactics. You know, the video game equivalent of the tennis net drop shot, over and over again. Yeah, it's legal, and yeah, you won fair and square. But I really don't want to play you anymore, and in fact my outlook on the entire game has soured.
Plus, with the full, rampant popularity at undefined skill levels that you get in new games/beta, you get chaotic environments with all kinds of players doing crazy shit that you didn't know could happen, possibly for the first time. I imagine TF2 would be the ultimate upper end of that experience as opposed to a mere rocket jump. It may be the only reason I get Halo 3 on launch: so I can enjoy the thrill of killing and being killed online for a little while before the 13 and below demographic runs it into the ground. |
