In 1991 it was easy to get swept up into a war against Iraq. They were invading other countries! Unfortunately for whoever made this .exe file, even invading Kuwait wasn't enough to get Saddam overthrown at the time. It took suspicious aluminum tubes to make that happen. The Saddam Hussein Target Game involved pressing space bar so the missile pacing back and forth beneath Saddam's portrait will launch and strike him in the face, drawing some EGA blood on the screen. The game was just an excuse for the megabyte of digitized sound that accompanied. The author doing his best raghead impression, complete with rolling French Rs (?!): "I am Saddam Hussein! The RRRRRRuler! Of IRRRRRRRRRaq!" ...plus all those awesome quotes about American dogs drowning in their own blood. It really got you motivated to launch a missile into his eye!
For the label, it's possible I wanted to illustrate the horror of war, the bloody cost of freedom, the human impact. Or at least the toll of drippy graffiti writing. But I was also buying both GoreZone AND Fangoria magazines at the time, so likely it was just a Danzig kinda vibe I was shooting for. Plus Saddam's face got all bloodied up in the game, so the theme carries over. Making only the S and the H drippy is pure laziness. I knew this freeware title didn't deserve to much time, just one colour and a couple of flourishes. As bad and cheap as this "game" is, it's still better than Dragon's Lair, the label beneath.
I'm embarassed about spelling Saddam wrong, but in my defense, this spelling is closer to how George Bush was pronouncing it at the time.
For Gulf War II, this game programmer probably churned out lots of great Flash work on Newgrounds.com. |
