The sexualization of your own children doesn't have to involve "bad touching." It could manifest itself as a pattern of seemingly-innocent behaviour, such as leaving sexually explicit material around the house, or taking your daughter as your "date" to an office party. But I don't care about that anymore, now I'm interested in Bowie.
I'd like to get into his music, but I don't have the disk space to just download his entire catalogue. Can you recommend a combination of two or three compilations and/or essential albums that give a nice overview of his better work? Thanks!
Jeez Jerry, two or three Bowie albums? Geez. Jeez.
The first Bowie I ever bought is the Sound + Vision compilation. It's a fine place to start and I still keep it myself because of some of the rare tracks.
You can pick your albums based on the tracks you liked on Sound + Vision except - the compilation stops sharp at 1980. After that, things started getting weird.
2 post-1980 albums to get if you're: more comfortable with things you're familiar with
Let's Dance
Hethen
No surprises here! Just pop and revisitation!
2 post-1980 albums to get if you're: more interested in things that are inherently interesting
1. Outside - this is still my favorite David Bowie album.
Baal
Outside is a big sprawling electronic mess and Baal is from Bowie's one-off appearance in a televised Bertolt Brecht play. He's in staggeringly appropriate voice for the occasion.
3 post-1980 albums to get if you're: looking to forge new territory
Reality
Never Let Me Down
Tonight
I've never listened to any of them. I listened to hours... once but I've forgotten it, so you can add that one too, if you like.
2 post-1980 albums to get if you're: looking for less of a balls-out Bowie extravaganza
The Budda Of Suburbia (soundtrack)
Labyrinth (soundtrack)
OH YES I SAID LABYRINTH. Even though it's beyond ridiculous, even though it involves Him kicking around muppets, you can see the bones and hear the voice of the magnificent ballads from Outside here. The structure is all there, it's just - tarted up. Buddha Of Surburbia features a couple of first-run efforts at Outside, but couched in less arcane musical terms. Anyway these are both very safe ways to dip your toe into the post-Teenage-Wildlife world.
4 David Bowie albums to get if you want to skip the compilation completely:
Ziggy Stardust
Heroes
Let's Dance
1. Outside No, I don't trust you with that album. Get Earthling instead. It's much more approachable. |
